04 · In the classroom

Thursday, the studio period.

The brief on the board is simple: make something that moves without a motor. Rubber bands, syringes, cardboard and argument follow. Two groups fail loudly and start again — which is the lesson.

The facilitator is one of the school’s own teachers, trained last term. By the final bell there are eleven machines that move, one that spectacularly does not, and a room that has to be asked to leave.

No — it is a timetabled, year-long programme with a curriculum. Workshops create a photo; programmes create a habit.

Your teachers, after our facilitator training. We stay involved, but the studio belongs to the school.

Less than you fear. Materials are planned per school and budget; the early modules run on deliberately simple materials because constraints teach.

SPARK is the programme; MakerGrid is the AI-and-robotics lab it can grow into. Schools often start with SPARK and add MakerGrid as students climb.
