What NEP 2020 actually asks your school to do about AI — and a practical first term

Beyond the policy language: the concrete capabilities NEP expects, and a term-sized plan a real school can execute.

NEP 2020 is quoted at schools far more often than it is read to them. On technology, its ask is more practical than the conference-stage versions suggest: build computational thinking into the curriculum, make learning experiential and hands-on, use technology to reduce teacher workload, and treat digital capability as infrastructure — not as an annual event.

Notice what is not in that list: a mandate to buy tablets, or to put a chatbot on the website.

Three capabilities, honestly stated

Read closely, the policy expects a school to develop three things:

  • Students who compute. Not just use computers — think in steps, test ideas, debug. This is a practical discipline; it is learned by building, breaking and rebuilding things, not by watching videos about innovation.
  • Teachers with leverage. The policy is blunt about teacher workload. Technology that adds data entry to a teacher's evening is anti-NEP regardless of what its brochure says. Technology that drafts the worksheet, the paper and the lesson plan is the policy's intent in software form.
  • Learning by doing. Labs, projects, experiments — with the constraint that most schools cannot triple their physical lab capacity. This is precisely where virtual labs and simulation earn their place: not replacing the bench, multiplying it.

A first term that actually happens

Grand rollouts fail in schools because terms are short and exams are immovable. A realistic first term looks like this:

  1. Weeks 1–2 — pick one wing, not the whole school. Two classes per grade in the middle school is enough to learn from and small enough to support properly.
  2. Weeks 3–8 — one experiential practice, weekly. A timetabled maker period or a virtual-lab session. Weekly and unmissable beats ambitious and occasional.
  3. Weeks 3–8, in parallel — give teachers one leverage tool. Start with the thing they resent most; for most staffrooms that is worksheet and question-paper preparation.
  4. Weeks 9–12 — write down what worked, in numbers. Periods run, worksheets generated, labs completed. A one-page note to the management with real figures beats a vision document.

A school that does this for two consecutive terms is, in any honest reading, ahead of the policy — and has receipts.

The trap to avoid

The common failure mode is buying the symbol of compliance — a robotics kit in a cupboard, an AI logo on the website — rather than the practice of it. Policy audits pass either way. Students only benefit one way.
